Head of the Great Karun catchment basin visits Dehkhoda sugarcane fields

At the same time with the reduction of river loads of Khuzestan rivers, the head of the Great Karun catchment basin visited Dehkhoda sugarcane Agro-industry.

According to PR reports, during this visit, which took place today, Sunday, July 4th, together with the CEO of Sugarcane & By-Products Development Company and a group of managers, Faraz Rabie Gholami was closely informed about the sugarcane fields water supply situation and the problems with the water pumping stations.
Drought and water shortage crisis in recent weeks have caused great damage to more than 10,000 hectares of sugarcane farms in Dehkhoda and subsequently caused pests and drying of the sugarcane.
During the visit, the head of the Great Karun catchment basin inspected the new plans and methods for irrigating sugarcane fields and was informed about the plans made to deal with the water shortage crisis in the company.
Variable and periodic furrow irrigation plan, reuse of drainage and controlled drainage in sugarcane fields are among the plans of this company in water consumption management.
On the sidelines of the visit, the CEO of Sugarcane Development Co. informed that the amount of water harvested in Sugarcane Agro-Industries was less than the approvals of the province’s drought headquarters and stressed that a number of sugarcane pumping stations were closed due to river load reduction.
Dr. Abd Ali Naseri said that the sharp decline in sugarcane growth and tonnage is the result of the continuing course of water shortage in sugarcane fields and called on the relevant authorities to take measures so that sugarcane lands are less affected because the livelihood of 100,000 people of Khuzestan depends on it.
He further referred to the company’s solutions in times of water shortage crisis and said: water consumption management in sugarcane fields is being done through reuse of drainage and other irrigation methods with the aim of reducing 20% of total water consumption in sugarcane fields.
The occurrence of severe drought and water shortage crisis in the 2017-2018 crop year also caused great damage to sugarcane fields and reduced sugar production to 300,000 tons in the seven Sugarcane Units.
