In addition to sweetening people's palate with sugar production, Sugarcane Development Co. has taken a purposeful and planned step to ensure the country's food security by developing "non-sugarcane" products.
According to the PR report of Sugarcane & By-Products Development company, beautiful sunflowers are one of the few non-sugarcane products of this industry that have borne fruit and now the harvest season has arrived.
According to the CEO of Sugarcane & By-Products Development company, this year more than 743 hectares of arable land for cultivation and eight industries have been allocated to this product.
Harvesting of sunflower oil seeds continues until mid-August, and according to estimations, a total of more than 1,000 tons of products will be harvested from these fields.
The country Loss of need to import oilseeds & Employment boom
Dr. Abd Ali Naseri stated that the country’s Loss of need to import oilseeds & the development of local employment are among the goals of this company in the development of non-sugarcane crops such as sunflowers.
He added: non-sugarcane crops such as wheat, rapeseed and sunflower, along with sugarcane cultivation, have turned Sugarcane Development into a “strategic company” in the field of agriculture, and the cultivation of these products in the sugarcane cropping rotation provides the basis for the optimal cultivation of sugarcane.
According to this report, 112 hectares of Imam Khomeini Agro-industrial lands, 100 hectares of Amir Kabir, 100 hectares of Mirza Kouchak Khan’s lands, 110 hectares of Debal Khazai’s agricultural lands, 120 hectares of Salman Farsi’s lands, and 201 hectares of Farabi’s lands have been dedicated to sunflower cultivation.
A calculated move in line with the policies of the Ministry of Agriculture
In this context, the agricultural deputy manager of Mirza Kochakh Khan Agro-industry, at the same time as the harvesting of sunflower oil seeds in this company, stated: Cultivation of this product is a purposeful and planned move in line with the policies of the Ministry of Agriculture, which ultimately contributes a lot to the country’s food security on the one hand and crop rotation on the other.
Mahmoud Hashemizadeh added: 100 hectares of Mirza’s sugarcane fields are dedicated to sunflower crop and it is harvested with an efficiency of about one ton per hectare, and its harvesting continues until the first half of August.
In addition to playing a role in providing part of the country’s need for oil, the development of sunflower cultivation can also help to expand the profitable beekeeping industry.
In non-sugarcane agriculture, plant residues are not burned, and experts, knowing that they are useful for improving the physical and chemical properties of the soil as well as reducing the environmental effects, mix them with the soil with appropriate agricultural tools.
